Much like your favorite foods, the best Halloween costumes rarely come from a plastic, vacuum-sealed pouch. These food-themed costume DIYs are novel, easy to pull together and air on the side of cute rather than creepy.

DIY Tomato Costume

What You Need:

  • Scissors
  • Green felt
  • Hot glue
  • Red cap
  • Oversized red sweatshirt
  • Large safety pin
  • Elastic ribbon (1 yard)
  • Long-sleeve red tee shirt
  • Polyfill Stuffing
  • Red leggings
  • Red shoes (KEDS Sneakers are a great option)

For the Hat:

  1. Cut three leaf shapes out of the green felt. Take another piece of felt and roll into a green stem. Hot glue the roll closed, and once cooled, attach the three felt leaves to its base using the glue gun. Finally, arrange the stem and leaves to your liking then attach them with additional hot glue to the top of the cap.

For the Body:

  1. Cut the arms off of the sweatshirt and create a make-shift hem by hot gluing the jagged cut edges inward.
  2. To create a tightly cinched waist that completes the bottom of the rounded shape, cut a small hole in the interior of the sweatshirt’s waistband. Attach a safety pin to the end of the elastic ribbon, thread it into the hole and work the elastic around the waistband until it comes full circle and you are able to pull the pin and elastic out of the hole it went into. Cut and tie the elastic ends together so the sweatshirt will fit snugly around your child’s waistline. Remove the safety pin.
  3. Pull the newly-altered sweatshirt over the long-sleeve tee and hot glue the bottom edges of the shirts together (be careful with your fingers!) to create a pouch to stuff. Note: If you sew, hand stitching may be an easier alternative to the hot glue gun
  4. Stuff the polyfill through the neck and between the sweatshirt and tee shirt until you get a plump, round shape. Once this is achieved, hot glue (or stitch) the neckline and sleeves shut.

The Finishing Touches:

Once the hat and body are complete, pair with a red leggings and a pair of cute, red sneakers or boots.

DIY Cotton Candy Costume

Cotton Candy Costume

Illustrated by Katie Eberts

What You Need:

  • Poster board
  • Hot glue
  • Tacky glue
  • Thin, silver, sparkly ribbon
  • Spray adhesive
  • White or pale pink cap
  • Blue, pink and/or purple spray paint
  • Blue long-sleeved dress or long tee shirt
  • Polyfill
  • Purple leggings
  • Sparkly shoes

For the Hat:

  1. Roll the poster board into a cone and hot glue to maintain shape. Trim base so the cone will sit comfortably on the head. Dot a bit of tacky glue near the base, attach the thin silver ribbon and wrap towards the top of the cone, creating a spiral and dotting glue at intervals to keep ribbon in place.
  2. Spray a spot of adhesive on hat and stick on a fluffy piece of polyfill immediately to create the cotton candy look. Work your way all around the hat, doing a little at a time, then leave a space to attach the cone.
  3. Spray polyfill with your pastel spray paint. Hold can far enough away to avoid drenching the design—use a light touch to create the cotton candy effect.
  4. Use hot glue to attach the cone to the hat. To give the cone a sturdy base, place and glue polyfill around the bottom. Create a cute ribbon tie to go under the hat if desired.
Note: For a quicker (but decidedly less comfy and warm) cotton candy cone hat, simply glue polyfill all around the base of the cone shape. But be sure to attach a ribbon strap to secure around the chin!

For the Body:

  1. Repeat the same method of spray-and-stick on your long-sleeved dress or long tee until the torso and back are completely covered. For more volume, layer the polyfill on top of itself as desired. Spray lightly with pastel spray paint until desired look is achieved.

The Finishing Touches:

Pair with some fun purple tights and sparkly silver or white shoes. Hint: sparkly spray paint will do the trick if you only have old sneakers on-hand.

DIY Broccoli Costume

What You Need:

  • 3 Shades of green yarn
  • Card board
  • Scissors
  • Hooded green sweatshirt
  • Hot glue
  • Green felt
  • Green pants
  • Green shoes
  1. Make approx. 35 pom poms (See a tutorial from Michael Ann Made) with the green yarn. You may vary the sizes. The number of pom poms needed will depend on the size of the child.
  2. Attach the pom poms to the hood of the green sweatshirt and bottom of sleeves using hot glue (or hand stitching, if preferred).
  3. Cut a leaf shape from the green felt and glue to hood or elsewhere, if desired.

The Finishing Touches:

Pair broccoli sweatshirt with green pants and green shoes.

DIY Spaghetti Costume

Spaghetti Costume

Illustrated by Katie Eberts

What You Need:

  • Styrofoam balls
  • Brown paint
  • Chunky cream-colored yarn
  • Cream bucket hat
  • Hot glue
  • Scissors
  • Cream-colored felt
  • Tacky glue
  • Button (or safety pin)
  • Cream sweatshirt
  • Cream sweat pants
  • Cream shoes

For the Hat:

  1. Paint styrofoam balls brown with paint. Set aside to dry.
  2. Unravel yarn and then drape on bucket hat. Carefully attach key pieces of yarn to the hat with hot glue. Be careful with those fingers!
  3. Attach the styrofoam “meatballs” throughout with glue.

For the Spaghetti Collar:

  1. Cut a strip of felt about 4 inches wide and long enough to drape loosely and comfortably around your child’s neck. Lay felt strip out horizontally. Unravel cream-colored yarn, and using your hot glue (or tacky glue), attach the end of the yarn 2 inches above the bottom of the left-hand corner of the felt. Measure about 12-15 inches, then fold over and bring back to the felt, creating a loop effect. Attach this directly beside the first glued end of yarn with additional glue, and then repeat with an additional loop. Continue the process until you reach the end of the felt strip. You will essentially be zig-zagging the yarn to create a spaghetti look.
  2. Fold the top 2 inches of the felt over on top of the yarn and glue in place. Once all glue is dry, you can cut the loops, if desired, for a different effect.
  3. Sew a button to one side of the collar and cut a slit on the other (or simply to attach both ends with a safety pin).

The Finishing Touches:

Dress child in cream sweatshirt, sweatpants and shoes. Attach collar, and don’t forget the hat!

Note: Because of the long loops of yarn in this costume, we recommend this costume for kids 5+ or worn with constant adult supervision.
